Edward Fredrick Munn 1833-1913 Sarah Ann Pearson 1839-1926

Background: The Munn's were from Worcester and moved to Birmingham sometime before coming to America. It was the Pearson side that was from Wiltshire. I have seen a lot of duplication of the incorrect data.
STORY: When I spoke to my gmother (Florence Munn Taylor) years ago, she mentioned that two of Edward's brothers paid for him to come to America and were never heard from again.

Edward Fredrick Munn
Born 8 Dec 1833 Birmingham, Warwick, England
Note: alternate birthdate 9 Dec 1834
Parents Eli Munn and Sarah Ann Weston
Occupation: Farmer
Married Sarah Ann Pearson 13 Aug 1859 Scotts Bluff, Nebraska
Note: Alternate marriage place Sweetwater, Wyoming
The following is a life sketch of this couple as told by their son, Robert. My corrections are in blue

Edward Fredrick Munn, born Dec 8 1833

At the age of 23, Edward was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Warwickshire, England, in the year of 1856. (Later, he would apostatize.) He immigrated all alone from the family in 1857. He built a little trading post and store on the North Platte River in Nebraska. He did not build the trading post by himself. He was a partner in the store and the bridge. He also built a toll bridge in which he charged fifty cents a wagon to cross. He had many experiences, especially trading hides and pelts with the Indians. But for a young man with no family behind him, he did very well.

Sarah Ann Pearson born Oct 13, 1839 in Oakley (Oaksey), Wilshire(Wiltshire), England, a daughter of Joshua Pearson and Sarah Ann Jeffcott. She was baptized at the age of 16, in 1856. She came with her mother to USA April 1859. Sarah was married to Richard before she left England Her mother fell in love with Richard Jones, whom she married later on in the same year.

Sarah Ann, the youngest of three children, with her mother, left with George Rowley Handcart company along with many more Pioneers on July 4, 1859. She was then 20 years old. When they came to the North Platt River, she met Edward Fredrick Munn, and they immediately fell in love. She stayed and they were married Aug 13, 1859. The following May in 1860 they came to Utah on a stage coach. They had known each other in England, but it wasn't until they met at Nebraska, they fell in love.

After they came to Utah, they had many heartaches. One of them was trying to deal with Indians who stole their horses and supplies. "If you ever gave an Indian a cup of sugar, you had to give them all, or they would rob you anyway."

They settled just north of Salt Lake City, where their first child was born. He was named after his father and called Ed. They farmed there and sold lots of garden stuff. Later they moved to Bountiful, where Sarah Ann, who was named for her mother and called Sadie; and another son, Joseph, was born. They moved to Montpelier, Idaho where they raised lots of hay and grain. They were there from 1865 to 1874.(He and his family were in Utah in the 1870 Census and he was head of his household, so the dates are a bit off) And four more children were born; Eli, Richard, Charles, and Angelina. From there they moved to Hooper, Utah in 1874 and in 1875 a baby William was born and died. Francis, Thomas, Robert, and Olive were all born in Hooper.

Life Note: Edward supposedly had a finger amputated because his finger got caught on a bolt in timber he was unloading from rail cars. Feeling OSL was negligent in not removing the bolts and nails from the timber, he sued Oregon Short Line for $1500 and was eventually awarded $120. Another article, this one entitled 'Court Notes' was printed by the same local paper and it claims his finger was 'lacerated' which is a far cry from being crushed so, again, one must remember that the papers are products of an earlier time - late 1880's and early 1900's. The reporters were obviously not required to verify facts.

One winter they had 70 head of cattle who got into grub-prickly-pears. They lost 35 head. They also were farming and trapping. They lived in a one room log cabin with a lean-to on it with 11 children, (Olive was nearly a year old before Ed got married).

They burned brush to keep warm. The closest wood was at the Weber Canyon, for there were no trees at all and no water but springs.

Most of the sewing was done at night, being the only time available. They used home made wax candles and ground grain to keep alive. The herd house was the first in Hooper to be built. It was near their home. A monument was erected there. Temple work done by his son Robert and Robert's wife, Verna.

Note: When he had a heart attack, his youngest daughter, Grace and her second husband came to live with her parents to help her mother take care of Edward.

Note: His death certificate has the incorrect information - claims his father was Joshua Munn and his mother was Sarah. This was likely because his wife was the informant and when asked, she gave the name of her own parents.

Sarah Ann Pearson
Born: 13 Oct 1839 Oaksey, Wiltshire, England
Parents: Joshua Pearson Sr and Sarah Ann Jeffcott
Immigrated to USA April 1857 with her mother, sister, and stepfather

Died: 15 Jan 1926 Hooper, Davis, Utah (Myocardatis with acute dilation, Grippe)

Her signature is on her husband's death certificate and I copied it here so people could have a look at her penmanship and note that her last name is signed 'Munns' not Munn. This can be significant when looking for relatives.

Olive Grace Munn
Born 26 Sep 1883 Hooper, Davis, Utah
Married (1) George Alvin Craythorn 17 Mar 1904 Ogden, Weber, Utah
Children: Della, George
I heard Olive and George were divorced, but the truth, written by Olive herself in 1956 states that:
Olive Grace Munn BeasleyGeorge had driven a team of horses to Ogden ( this being our only means of transportation at the time ) to obtain medicine for our baby Ray, who had been ill for several weeks. As he approached the railroad yards in West Ogden, a train whistled and frightened the horses, causing them to run and throw George on to the railroad tracks. The injury received resulted in his tragic death. Our baby, Ray, died three days after his father was killed. Husband and son were buried together in the same casket. They were laid to rest in the Hooper cemetery.
(2) George Leroy (Roy) Beasley 1 Dec 1909 Ogden, Weber, Utah
