Ruth Swan
Birth 10 March 1652 Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts
Possible marriage note: in a book: Goodman, a Family History written by Alfred Edwin Goodman published 1916, it mentions on page 81 that "Thus it would appear that Ruth first married John Cross and after the two boys, John and William, were born John Cross died and she married John Hartshorn under her maiden name which was sometimes done in those days after short marriages." The words "...it would APPEAR..." bothers me. Appearances are not always right and in 1916, perhaps they considered getting married and having two children constitutes and "short" marriage. In any case, as you can see below, in the ORIGINAL marriage record, Ruth is not listed as a widow. In all the years I have done genealogy, I have not seen a widow listed with her maiden name - especially when she had children. So, hopefully, I can find proof that she really was married to John Cross prior to her marriage to Mr. Hartshorne. The only thing I have found, so far, is findagrave which claims her parents are totally different people - John and Rebecca Palfryman Swan.

By the way, on Robert (her father's) findagrave memorial (See link above) there is this note with Ruth's information:

Ruth Swan, who married John Hartshorne, her birth is not recorded in the Massachusetts records, but her heirs are mentioned in her father's estate records. John Hartshorne calls Robert (Jr) brother and speaks of Mother and Father Swan. She died 12 Dec 1690 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts. She is not linked to her parents on Findagrave due to the misinformation the manager of her memorial uses despite repeated resources given to him. Her memorial is #136755686. Sources: Early Settlers of Rowley, MA., Ancestors of Allen Swan, American Genealogist V. 24, p.15 and History of Haverhill, Massachusetts.

I created another findagrave memorial - with the right information. I put her in the same cemetery as her son, John Jr. There is a problem with this in that it creates duplicate information, but because the manager of her current memorial doesn't want to cooperate, I see no other recourse. Her husband was a stone carver and created many gravestones. On Family Search, in the Life Sketch section, I corrected some spelling/punctuation and added some information I considered important to point out because I do not think that Ruth was buried in the same place as her husband as he had been married once before and again, after, her death. It says:

John was the son of Thomas Hartshorn & Susanna Buck. On September 22, 1709, in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, he married Mary Leighton.

He served in King Phillip's War; Capt Sills company, 1675 AND 1676. He was one of the last surviving veterans of King Phillips War. He also survived a French and Indian raid on Haverhill, Massachusetts, in 1708, in which his third wife, his son, and three grandsons were killed.

He became a lieutenant in the militia and was active in the Indian Wars, serving under Capt. Sill, from 1675-76. He served in Queen Anne's War in the Massachusetts Militia.

John Hartshorn was a weaver from Haverhill, MA, a town about ten miles up on the Merrimack River. Boston's slate gravestones did not make it into Haverhill. This left the town and its neighbor, the town of Bradford across the river, without gravestones.

Circa 1700 Mr. Hartshorn, at age fifty, (Ruth had already died) decided to take on a second career. He started carving gravestones. He developed his own image, a mask-like face. Emanating out from the face were lines of many configurations. Later on, he added large circles with geometric designs inside. What he created is called the Merrimac Valley Style. Hartshorn borrowed ideas from designs he found on Boston's gravestones. Those ideas he reworked into his own creations. He obviously had the ability to carve skull and wing designs but did not. Through various circumstances, he moved a couple of times and ended up living in Connecticut where he continued to carve gravestones into his eighties. Many of his gravestones can be seen in MA. & CT. to this day.

Married 1 August 1699 Susanna Eastman in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts
John and Susanna's marriage Note: she was the widow of Thomas Wood, who had been killed by Indians along with their daughter, Susanna, which explains why she was so determined not to be killed by Indians when they came to kill her and John, and their children.

Children:  John, Ruth, William, Nathaniel, Ann, Asa, Elizabeth, Caleb
Here is a brief story about the bravery of he and his wife in the History of Haverhill, Massachusetts.: During the Indian war, when so many of the inhabitants of Haverhill were killed, the Indians attacked their house, which stood in the field called White's lot, nearly opposite to the house of Capt. Emerson. Mr. Swan and his wife saw them approaching, and determined, if possible, to save their own lives and the lives of their children from the knives of the ruthless butchers. They immediately placed themselves against the door, which was so narrow that two could scarcely enter abreast. The Indians rushed against it, but finding that it could not be easily opened, they commenced their operations more systematically. One of them placed his back to the door so that he could make his who strength bear upon it, while others pushed against him.

The strength of the besiegers was greater than that of the besieged, and Mr. Swan, being rather a timid man, almost despaired of saving himself and family and told his wife that he thought it would be better to let them in, but this resolute and courageous woman had no such idea. The Indians had now succeeded in partly opening the door, and one of them was crowding himself in, while the other was pushing lustily after. The heroic wife saw that there was no time for parleying; she seized her bake spit, which was nearly three feet in length, and a deadly weapon in the hands of the woman, as it proved, and collecting all the strength she possessed, drove it through the body of the foremost.

This was too warm a reception for the besiegers; it was resistance from a source and with a weapon they little expected, and surely, who else could ever think of spitting a man? The two Indians thus repulsed, immediately retreated and did not molest them again. Thus, by the fortitude and heroic courage of a wife and mother, this family was probably saved from a bloody grave.
