William Trotter
Born Jun 1695 Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Married Hanna Maurle abt 1720 Pennsylvania
Children:  Rebecca, John, Esther, Lydia, Margaret, Joseph
Occupation: Farmer (they called it husbandman) in White Marsh, Philadelphia county, Minister
Died 19 Dec 1748 Plymouth, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

“William Trotter was the son of William Trotter, and was born in the neighbourhood of Abington, fourth month, 1695. His memorial says: ‘Of religious parents, and amongst Friends was educated. As he grew in years, he was blessed in that he grew in grace, and in the fear and knowledge of our blessed Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. About the twenty-first year of his age, he received a gift in the ministry, in which he as frequently exercised during the course of his life. His ministry was sound and savoury, attended with a good degree of that life and power by which the dead are raised, and without which preaching is vain. He was not tedious or burthensome, but often very reaching and edifying to her hearers.’

“He removed to the neighbourhood of Plymouth, towards the close of 1721, taking a certificate from Abington to Gwynedd Monthly Meeting in the first month following. Here he soon became extensively useful in religious Society, and continued active and laborious for the good of others until within a short time of his death.

“His friends thus characterize him: ‘in his life and conversation he was grave, yet innocent, cheerful, and, we think, strictly just in his dealings; also a lover and promoter of peace and unity and brotherly love amongst Friends, of which he was himself a good pattern. He was generally beloved during his life, and at his death left a good savour behind him. His removal from time to a happy eternity, though certainly his great gain was a considerable loss to the meeting where he belonged. He departed this life on the 19th day of Tenth month, 1749; aged about 53 years and 6 months, and was decently interred on the 21st day of the same month, in Friends’ burying-ground at Plymouth. We believe he is gone from his laborious service, to receive an heavenly reward “where the wicked shall cease from troubling, and the weary soul shall be at rest.”’

Abraham Browne 1730 Mary Trotter 1734

Abraham Browne
Born 23 Apr 1730 Plumstead, Bucks, Pennsylvania
Parents Joseph Browne and Ann Dawson
Religion:  Quaker
Note:  Abraham was disowned by the Quakers in 1756 when they charged him with "bearing arms in the war"  When a member's offense came to the attention of the Monthly Meeting which was not supposed to happen before one or more Friends had already admonished the offender without success, the meeting would appoint a committee (usually of two solid Friends) to ascertain the facts about the matter reported, and (if the member complained of was guilty) to learn whether he or she was repentant. It the individual did not seem contrite the visiting Friends would labor with him or her in meekness and brotherly compassion, hoping to bring the offender to sincere repentance. If this was successful the Friend would offer a written apology (often called an acknowledgment ) expressing that what he or she had done was contrary to the principles of Friends, that s/he was sorry for it and intended with God's help to behave better in the future. This was also referred to as condemning one's action. There was no shunning involved in disownment; familial and secular relationships continued as before. http://www.quaker.org/disown.html

A Testimony of the monthly meeting of Friends in Philadelphia concerning our friend, Benjamin Trotter, who was born in this city in the ninth month of the year 1699

Newspaper Obituary extraction
He was one whom the Lord early visited and reached unto by the reproofs of His devine light and grace, for those youthful vanities and corrupt conversation, by which nature he was prone to and pursued, to the grief of his pious mother, who was religiously concerned to restrain him; but as he became obedient to the renewed visitations of the heavenly call, denying himself of those things he was reproved for, he not only ceased in doing evil, but to live in the practice of doing well; and continuing faithful, became an example of plainess and self-denial, for which he suffered much scoffing and mocking of those who had been his companions in folly; yet he neither fainted nor was turned aside by the reproaches of the ungodly, which thus fell to his lot, for his plain testimony to their evil conduct.

In the twenty-sixth year of his age, he appeared in the work of the ministry, and laboured therein in much plainess and godly sincerity, adorning the doctrine he preached by a humble cirumspect life and conversation, being exemplary in his diligence and industry to labor honestly for a livelihood, though often in much bodily infirmity and weakness desiring, as he sometimes expressed, that he might not owe any man any thing but love. His inoffensive openess and affability, drawing many of different denominations to converse with him, he had some seasonable opportunities of admonishing and rebuking the evil doer and evil speaker, which he did, in the plainess of an upright zeal for the promotion of piety and virtue, tempered with true brotherly kindness and charity; respecting not the person of the proud nor of the rich, because of his riches, but with Christian freedom, declaring the truth to his neighbor, and was thus in private as well as in public, a preacher of righteousness.

In his public ministry, he was zealous against errors both in principle and practice, and constantly concerned to press the necessity of obedience to the principle of divine grace; a manifestation which is given to every man; knowing from his own experience that it bringeth salvation to all them that obey and follow its teachings, and was frequently enabled with energy and power, to bear testimony to the outward coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, his miraculous birth, his holy example in his life and precepts, and his sufferings and death at Jerusalem, by which he  hath obtained eternal redemption for us.

In his public testimony, a little before his last sickness, he expressed his apprehensions, that his time among us would be short, and fervently exhorted to watchfulness and care, to keep our lamps trimmed and our lights burning, and urged the necessity of being prepared to meet the bridegroom, as not knowing what hour he will come.

He travelled several times and and visited most of the meetings of Friends in this province and New Jersey, and some of the adjacent provinces, but was not much from home; being upwards of forty years a diligent attender of our religious meetings in this city, zealously concerned for the maintaining our Christian discipline in meekness and true charity,  careful in the exercise of pure religion, visiting the widow and fatherless in their afflictions, and often qualified to administer relief and consolation to their dejected minds.

Afflictions of divers kinds, and some very deep and exercising, fell to his lot through the course of his life, which he was enabled to bear with exemplary patience and resignation, and particularly through his last illness, in which, in upwards of six weeks, he underwent great difficulty and pain, being afflicted with the asthma and dropsy, so that he suffered much, yet was never heard to utter a murmur or complaint, but frequently expressed his thankfulness that he had not more pain, and often engaged in prayer, tha the might be preserved in patience to the end, which was graciously granted him; so that he was capable of speaking to the comfort and edification of those who visited him; and from the fervrent love of the brethren, which evidently appeared through his life, and most conspiciously during his last illness, and even in the hour of his death, we have a well-grounded assurance that he is passed unto life, and hath received a reward of righteousness.

His body was attended by a great number of Friends and others, his fellow citizens of divers religious denominations, to our meeting house in High Street, on the 24th of the third month 1768, and after a solemn meeting, in which several living testimonies were borne, was interred in our burial ground in this city.  Signed James Pemberton, Clerk, the fourth day of the 8th month, 1769

Martin Blaine Smith 1915-1966 Arline Mitchell 1919-2002

Martin Blaine Smith
Martin Blaine Smith
Note: He went by his middle name - Blaine
Parents: Martin Smith (Janus Marinus Elmann Ohlsson) and Ester Elizabeth East
-M-
Maternal Grandfather

Born 10 Feb 1915 Ogden, Weber, Utah
Married: complicated, keep reading

Occupations
Tractor operator for the War Department in Ogden Arsenal (1940 census)
Utah General Depot 1941-1958
US Army Depot Warehouseman (1950 census)
Rawson and Lund Garage 1959-1963
Heavy Duty/ Diesel Mechanic at Porter Delton Company Hill Air Force Base (HAFB) at the time of his death.

Note: Blaine was an alcoholic.  I mention this because, the way I understand it, the trait can be inherited.  My maternal grandfather was a man with many skeletons in his closet and I only mention those that may affect the living and/or combating rumor with truth.

Arline and Blaine

He married 1) Arline Mitchell 17 Oct 1936 Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah.
Note: He married her under a false name: Jannis Blaine Smith. Where did he get the name? His father's first name was Janus. If you look at his signature on the marriage license (see the enlarged section of the signatures just below), he didn't spell Janus correctly.

The bogus name he signed on the marriage license.
His mother-in-law, Lurena, was one of the witnesses.

Arline filed for divorce 25 Oct 1944.  It was final six months later.
Blaine was given custody of their four children by 1947.

Note:  According to my Aunt Sharon, Blaine was in a relationship with a woman named Molly (?) between 1944 and 1952.  She may have been a common-law wife. She had a child, which his daughter, Sharon, tended.  Molly worked downtown Ogden and was kind.  Sharon and Duke liked her. As he got older, Duke wondered if Molly's girl was Blaine's. At this point, there is no proof one way or another.

Also, there is another story, one that I have debated sharing, but someone may be looking for paternity answers and it may help them. When my Aunt Sharon was a little girl - this would be the 1940's - one day her father took just her for a ride (a rare thing and likely an excuse) and drove to a trailer park. It was the first time she'd seen a trailer. The woman had just had a baby. She couldn't remember if it was a boy or a girl. The baby wasn't well. She didn't know what was wrong with it.  Sharon thinks it was a boy, but is unsure.

Now here is the crux of this story: Afterward, her father told her to not tell (and indication that in all likelihood, the child was his and illegitimate) and bribed her with ice cream (if the first part was an indication, this, in my opinion, confirms it). She kept his secret until she told me. As an adult, she has wondered if she has another sibling somewhere. So, if you have ties to Ogden, were born in the mid-1940's and your mother lived in a trailer park, you may be connected to the Smith family.

Hilda was born 4 Oct 1926 in Havre de Grace, Maryland. She was the daughter of Samuel McCrone and Eva DeBaugh.

Blaine married Hilda McCrone 12 February 1952 in Elko, Nevada

In this picture, you can see what his daughter, Sharon, calls "the East-grey" eyes.
In most pictures, Blaine's eyes look blue.

Death of Hilda:  15 Apr 1955 Dee Hospital, Ogden, Weber, Utah

Note: She was 28 and pregnant (about 3 months) when she died of a heart attack. Blaine (husband) was the informant on the death certificate.

Rumor: Blaine supposedly asked the gender of baby and it was (supposedly) a boy. How this could be, when the baby was not delivered (to my knowledge) so they could see. They didn't have gender identification in the 1950's.

Her daughter, Della and two stepchildren, (Sandy and Duane) were at the house (708 3rd Street, Ogden) when it happened. Sandy, husband Don, and their oldest daughter, Kathy, had moved in while Don was at Basic Training. Lorie went to Sandy when she couldn't wake her mother up.  The ambulance was called. Death was declared at 9:35 p.m.  My question is protocol: since Lorie couldn't wake her mom, was Hilda already dead and the ambulance merely transported her body, practicing working on it or was it required by law to do this?  It will likely remain a mystery for now.

Note: the house where Blaine lived was where his daughters and son lived with him while they were growing up. My mother, Sally, helped him build it.

HISTORY NOTES

Hilda had been married before and had a daughter (Della Lorraine Gill) from a previous marriage.  Her daughter's name, Della, was changed to Laurie by Sharon, then to Esther Lorie when Velma Alexander, Blaine's sister, came into the picture.  Velma claimed she adopted Lorie. I have not seen any official adoption papers.

The following is the story I heard from my Aunt Sharon, Blaine's youngest daughter: Lorie was born Della Lorraine Gill. Her mother, Hilda, married my grandfather, Martin Blaine Smith. Note: still working on figuring a few things out about the traveling from Wisconsin to Utah, since Lorie was born in Wisconsin).

Blaine's kids (Sally, Sandy, Sharon, Duane) were grateful for Hilda because she cooked nice meals and was kind to them.

Hilda was pregnant and was resting on the sofa when she had her massive heart attack. At home at the time were Sandy (who was living with them at the time), Duane, and Laurie.

I was also told Lorie's name was spelled Laurie until she was older (see picture in memories section of Family Search. It will show the spelling). The story behind this is that Hilda wanted the girls to choose a name for Della and Sharon chose Laurie - named after a pretty girl at school.

After Hilda died, Blaine did not want to keep Della/Laurie (this was a good thing - Blaine was an alcoholic) and took her to his EX-mother-in-law (Lurena Taylor Mitchell) to keep until other arrangements could be made.

***This is where Velma, Blaine's sister, comes into the story. She took Lorie in and supposedly adopted her, changing her name to Esther Lorraine Alexander. Does anyone know the truth? It wasn't mentioned in the obit and I think it would have been if true. Velma's son, Roy, is mentioned in the obit, but Velma is not.

BLAINE'S MARRIAGES CONTINUED

3) Married Patricia Fisher - according to Velma, Blaine's sister, Pat was Mel Fisher's sister. The marriage lasted 30 days according to my Aunt Sharon, his youngest daughter.  They were both alcoholics and things didn't work out. Pat remarried. Divorced in Denver, Colorado 22 June 1957 according to the marriage license for Blaine and Zelma
___

4) Married Zelma Bennett (ex-wife of George Sprunt) 17 July 1959 Uinta, Wyoming is where the marriage license was applied for. I heard from Aunt Sharon that they divorced, remarried, and divorced again.  So, this means they must have married between June of 1957 and 1959. I had heard they married in 1958, but have no legal sources for the marriage. Also, if one counts the months, she was pregnant with Sammy at the time of her second marriage to him, so she might have remarried because Sam was Blaines.

NOTE: Zelma married her first husband, George Sprunt, twice as well - once in 1947 divorced him on 29 Dec 1948 and remarried him in 1949

Zelma Bennett Smith and Martin Blaine Smith

Note:  There may have been another marriage for Blaine. If there was, I have not found a legitimate source yet. He was living with a woman by the name of Helen Brane at the time of his death in 1966.  She may have been a common-law wife. She was in her 40's and had a baby and lost it.  The child may or may not have been Blaine's.

Obituary
Paradise glows brighter now with the presence of our mother, Sally Lurena Smith Williams, who entered its gates on 9 Nov 2012.

She spent the last several months of life teaching us her final lessons on endurance, patience, and love. Mom was born 24 March 1937 to Martin Blaine Smith and Arline Mitchell. She married and divorced Robert Taylor, Gordon Evans, and Dean Johanson. She was the widow of Dallas Williams.

She loved music and was an avid dancer. Sally belonged to the Western Two-Steppers dance team, was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and worked as a cook in the Ogden City School District until she retired.

As a single parent, her life revolved around raising her children and she sacrificed much for their sake. Mom thanked her family many times for being by her side as she made her long journey home.

Her parents, grandparents, and one grandchild graduated from life before her and are undoubtedly having a joyous reunion. The family would like to thank everyone that brought smiles and helping hands while she underwent polishing during the last stages of her life.
