Dietrich Horning 1731-1793 Maria Kraus 1731

Background on the Horning family

The following paragraph is quoted from page 645 of the book "Mohawk Valley – Gateway to the west" Vol IV published in 1925:

"The Horning family was of Holland Dutch descent and tradition has it that there were originally 4 Horning brothers all of whom landed in this country from Holland on Oct 4 1732. One of the brothers settled in Perm, another in Kentucky, a third in Lewis County of New York, and the 4th in Tryon County of New York.

Certain it is that one of these brothers, Dedrick Horning, came over from Holland and settled on a farm several miles southwest of Canajoharie and Ft Plain in what was then Tryon County. Little is known of Dedrick's early life, save that he had 5 sons, Dedrick Jr, Adam, John, Lanert, and George who were residing with and helping their father when the war of revolution broke out.

That there was no wavering between sides is shown in the fact that all 5 sons enlisted in the same regiment to serve their country. Due to their living in the Canajoharie district, as mapped out by Sir William Johnson, they were assigned to the 1st regiment, Tryon County militia which was under the command of Colonel Cox and Colonel Campbell.

Their greatest service to their country was rendered in the then little thought of but now famous battle of Oriskany in which they and their regiment fought so valiantly, and in which, unlike many of their comrades, their lives were spared.

The Battle of Oriskany

Battle of Oriskany
The Battle of Oriskany was one of the bloodiest battles in the American Revolutionary War and a significant engagement of the Saratoga campaign. On August 6, 1777, a party of Loyalists and several hundred Indigenous allies across several nations ambushed an American military party that was marching to relieve the siege of Fort Stanwix.

Robert Flint abt 1705 Susanna Bauman 1709

Whenever possible, I like to include links from experts on family lines and this site belongs to David Burton Flint, author of several books, including the historical fiction concerning this family called, "The Life and Times of Robert Flint the Pioneer" His website gave this family character, flavor, and life. Even better, he has a personal investment in getting this information out. He is one of the descendants of Alexander, Robert's 2nd son. David was kind enough to allow me to put his link here:
http://www.dbflint-colonial-wars.com/ancientflintburial.html
Note:  DEAD LINK(S)
I was just warned by Ken (see comments below) that there are dead links on this page.  I have not done research on this line since 2010.  I will do my best to fix them as I go through and replace what Google ruined when they removed all the pictures.  I am currently writing/researching another novel and working on my own family history line (this is my husband's line).
Here is a working link (as of 2017) about David, complete with picture and some personal history:  http://www.authorsden.com/davidburtonflint
Do yourselves a favor and take a gander at what it provides. You'll enjoy reading about David's journey and ultimate find - the family graveyard. Thank you, David.
Note: If you are traveling in New York, the Cherry Valley Museum has some items that belonged to Robert Flint.

Another site concerning this area and families in the area: http://www.fortklock.com/Contents.htm

Note: Bowman’s creek was also known as Sprout Brook then Canajoharie Creek in the town of Canajoharie, New York.

Robert Flint
Born Abt 1705 New York
Parents: John Ephraim Flint (unknown mother)
Married 1) Susanna Bauman 1 Jan 1732 Reformed Church, Schoharie, Schoharie, New York
2) Joanna Hand (lots of possible dates for marriage, the funniest one is 1832 - which is 33 years after Robert died)
Military: French and Indian War
1790 Census states Flint, Robert had the following number of people in his household:1 -Free white males over 16 years
4 -Free white males under 16 years
2-Free white females
0 -All other free persons
1-Slaves
Died 1799 Sprout Brook, Montgomery, New York
Buried Family burial ground, Sprout Brook, Montgomery, New York
Note: If you want an inspirational story about how this grave was found and how it provided the inspiration for an historical novel about this American family, please go to David Flints website

Susanna Bauman
Born 27 Mar 1709 Sprout Brook, Montgomery, New York
Parents: John Adam Bauman and Susanna Catherina Dresch
Died 1792 (this has to be wrong since we know Robert's second wife, Joanna, died that same year and Robert wasn't a polygamist) Susanna's death had to be after 1742, the year Robert, their youngest son, was born.  The other option is that they are the same woman - however, in light of the birth of the last son (Isaac) taking place in 1768, when Susanna would be 59 years old, I rather doubt it.

2nd Wife: Joanna Hand
Note: I included her here because her stone was so cool - the fact they used regular stones to mark the graves is both educational and a sign that someone cared enough to do it.
Born abt 1725 or later
Parents: Josiah Hand and Mary Halsey
Died 1792 Canajoharie, New York
Buried: Family Burial Ground, Sprout Brook, Montgomery, New York Note: you can barely see it, but the date is in the upper left hand corner of the rock and her initials are on its face (J.F.)

Nancy Keller
Born 18 Oct 1800 Minden, Montgomery, New York
Married 1) Henry Markell 17 Mar 1817 Minden, Montgomery, New York
2) Chauncy Nellis 1835
Died 18 Apr 1877 Minden, Herkimer, New York
Buried (I found a Nancy Nellis wife of Peter Nellis, buried in Cherry Hill Cemetery in NY but she was born in 1822. I find it too much of a coincidence that two Nancy Keller's would be married to men with the last name of Nellis. They must be related)

William J Keller
Born 16 Aug 1801 Palatine, Montgomery, New York
Married Elizabeth Van De Werken 5 January 1823 Montgomery, New York, United States
Children:  Jacob, Ann, Sarah, Sylvanus, Margaret, John, Mariah, Julia
Died 1857 Montgomery, New York
Note:  He died prior to 8 May 1857 when Fred Krutina was listed on the probate record as appearing to discharge his duties as executor on the probate record. Evidently, there was another will presented in Germany (why, I can't tell since he was born in New York) for probate and it was nullified when the newer will with a more current date was presented.
