Israel Kenney 1734-1791 Susannah Hood 1745

Note:  There are at least 4 Israel Kenney's and all were born in Massachusetts. Jeffrey Green attempted to untangle them. He started in 2003 and the information just below are his findings.

Here are the four: 

(1) Israel Kenney, Sr. was the first of the name in the colonies. He was born in Boxford (inc. into Middleton in 1728), Essex, MA on August 24, 1712 to Daniel, Sr. and Mary (Richards) Kenney [R-01]

(2) Israel Kenney, Sr. was the second of the name in the colonies. He was born in Sutton, Worcester, MA on October 23, 1739 to Daniel, Jr. and Elizabeth (Stockwell) Kenney. [R-02] He was a nephew of Israel #1

(3) Israel Kenney, Jr. was the third of the name in the colonies. He was born in Middleton, Essex, MA on January 6, 1745/46 to the unmarried Rebeckah Perkins and is* the son of Israel #1 [R-03] (*This has been proven with DNA testing and a proper paper trail.)

(4) Israel Kenney, Jr. was the fourth of the name born in the colonies. He was born in Middleton, Essex, MA on October 21, 1746 to Israel #1 and Eunice (White) Kenney [R-03]

Note: On Christmas Eve of 1791 Israel Kenney crossed the Saint John River to Maugerville, but on the way fell through the newly formed ice and was drowned.
Buried: Old Morrison Graveyard, Oromocto, New Brunswick, Canada

IMPORTANT: The graveyard was sold and made into a hospital parking lot. Bones were uncovered in 1978 which led to an official police investigation and that stirred up the elderly locals recalling the graveyard. Evidently, they didn't bother to remove all the bones. The headstones, according to the article (I listed it under sources) were used by someone for a pathway. The main cemetery was supposedly moved in 1959. Hally Kimball is the woman responsible for gathering the uncovered bones and placing them in the back corner of the Anglican cemetery.

Israel Kinney married June 9, 1763, at Topsfield, Massachusetts, Susannah, daughter of Nathaniel and Abigail (Potter) Hood. She was born at Topsfield 27 Oct 1745. Her sister, Sarah, had married Alexander Tapley, Dec 9, 1762, and her sister Abigail Hood had married, July 18, 1761, Stephen Hovey. 

The three sisters, with their husbands, removed from Topsfield to the township of Maugervile, N.B. Alexander and Sarah Tapley, and Stephen & Abigail Hovey, came in the schooner "Eunice" which arrived at Saint John April 26, 1767. Israel and Susannah Kinney arrived later the same year. Alexander and Sarah Tapley were fortunate enough to secure land in Maugerville the first year they arrived, but apparently, there was none available for the Kinneys and Hoveys. They probably stayed at first with the Tapleys, or with the Barlows who had arrived in 1765. Richard Barlow was in charge of the store established in Maugervlle by the Saint John River Society, and his wife was Abigail, widow of Isreal's brother, Asa Kinney. 

It was probably about 1768 when Israel Kinney first went to Oromocto. There was built shortly after that time a blockhouse, called Fort Hughes, at the mouth of the Oromocto on its southerly bank. It was occupied by about 25 men under the command of Lieutenant Constant Conner and was used to control traffic on the Oromocto water route.

Israel Kinney built his log house just above the blockhouse, and his land stretched up the hill where the Town of Oromocto is now located. Bell reports (page 3): "The Kenney family seem to have been members of the Anglican church...but Israel Kenny was moved by the evangelical enthusiasm of the Congregational people of Maugerville, joined their church, and was made an elder. These people of Maugerville came from that Puritan stock that believed in witches and hung them. Their religion was too demanding for Israel and he fell from grace and was brought before the elders. He had back-slided, had indulged in rum, then universally drunk except in Maugerville."

Family tradition claims that Susannah Kinney sailed to Massachusetts during the summer of 1791 to visit her relatives in Topsfield. She was still there Christmas Eve that year and when Israel crossed to Maugerville on the river ice, perhaps to pick up a few things at Barlow's store, although another report says to deliver a set of chains that he had made for a customer. On his return, probably after dark, he got into an "air hole" as he neared home, and was drowned.

He was buried in the Old Morrison Grave Yard, located near where the Baptist Church was later built in Oromocto. His youngest son, Andrew, was born in Topsfield shortly after Israel's death. His widow returned to Oromocto with Andrew and later married her widower brother-in-law, Alexander Tapley of Maugerville.

I send you a very brief sketch of the life of Sister Sarah Houston Pratt, who died at Coyote Creek, Grass Valley, Garfield County, May 26th 1886, which you will confer a favor by publishing.
She was the daughter of James and Mary Houston, born in Stark County, Ohio, August 3rd, 1823. When 9 years of age she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and, with her parents, gathered with the Church and suffered in all the persecutions of that time.
In 1848 she was married to Apostle Parley P. Pratt, and in 1847, in company with her husband and the first company of Saints, started across the plains, traveling on foot, with her infant in her arms, most of the way. From that time until her demise she suffered many severe hardships; but in the hardest trials she trusted in the will of God. It may truly be said of her, “Thou hast come out of much tribulation.” Of late she has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Sarah E. King, at Grass Valley. She leaves 6 children and 30 grandchildren to mourn her departure.

Catherine's shared headstone

Note: While the history from Lucille is fun to read, there are a few points I feel are important enough to bring up for they change relationships and timing.
1) Catherine became an orphan on 21 Mar 1847 when her mother died in Winter Quarters (see Winter Quarters Project website) so she was not an orphan when she first arrived there and likely traveled to Winter Quarters with her mother and maybe a married sister or two.
2) In the story, Catherine's sisters were listed as Mrs. Heber C. Kimball and Mrs. Henry Rollins. Anne, her sister, did marry Heber, but I the way I understood it, Mrs. Rollins was actually the sister of

Horace's first wife, Nancy Walker - see below.

Written and compiled in 1927 by his granddaughter, Lucille Walker, and displayed online at homeutah@edu: It explains how Catherine, much younger than Horace, came to be his 2nd wife:

"...with Nancy (Horace's 1st wife) during her illness was my grandmother, Catherine Houston, then an orphan girl of fifteen years. After the children went to live with Nancy's sister, Mrs. Henry Rollins. Catherine was taken along too, to take care of the children who loved her. Together they crossed the plains.

Horace Martin Alexander

Grandfather received word that his children, with one of the Parley Pratt Companies was well on its way to the Valley. (NOTE: Catherine traveled at the age of 16 with the Willard Richards company which left 3 Jul 1848 and arrived in Salt Lake in mid October 1848) So with a few other brothers he hurried forth again on horseback to meet them. It is thought that he sighted the emigrant train somewhere in Wyoming. Grandmother still continued to live with the Henry Rollins family and to take care of the little Alexanders until her marriage to Horace.
