In order to homestead land, you had to be a naturalized citizen.  He applied at Benkelman, Nebraska for citizenship.  Unfortunately, none of the papers clarify where in Germany he came from.  No one in this family could read, write, or speak English when they first arrived, so  the surname was spelled Markwadt.

Note:  Homesteaded land in Frontier County, north of Red Willow County, on 16 Dec 1886.  Sold this land on 24 Dec 1895 and moved to McCook where he worked for various farmers until the time of his death.

Chas. Markwad Passes Away-
Charles Markwad died last Saturday evening at 7:30 in his 65th year, on the Barbazette farm a few miles southwest of the city. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church, Monday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Edker Burton, after which interment was made in Riverview cemetery, Miss Tillie Penner of Omaha, a granddaughter, was present at the funeral. Mr Charles Markwad, whose funeral was held at the Baptist Church Monday afternoon was born in Germany September 22, 1844. Came to the United States in 1876 and settled in Lake county, Illinois, From there, he with his family, consisting of wife and six children, removed to Red Willow County, Nebraska, twenty-three years ago, where he resided until his death, February 13th. His wife and five children, August, Ernest, Charles, Mrs. Emma Redhouse and Mrs. Etta Pope, with a large circle of friends, are left to mourn their loss.
