Life Sketch
In 1834 Isaac marched to Missouri as a member of Zion's Camp and afterwards located in Nauvoo, Ill. Until his death, he entertained friends, family and saints with his fiddle music--in Nauvoo, on the plains, in Salt Lake City and in Sanpete County--and his 1724 instrument remains intact and playable.

It was played was for a commemorative dinner hosted for the First Presidency, General Authorities and their wives on a Friday evening preceding October General Conference in 1964. 

It was returned to Nauvoo in September of 2005. The violin was played for the following leaders of the church: Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow, Joseph F. Smith, Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, Harold B lee, Spencer W. Kimball, Ezra Taft Benson, Howard W. Hunter,and Gordon B Hinckley. President David O. McKay was unable to travel to Provo from Salt Lake because of his failing health.

Isaac worked for the Church, traveled as a preacher of the Gospel and participated in the general exodus of the saints from Nauvoo in February 1846. He spent a short time in the camp on Sugar Creek, Iowa, and later crossed the prairies of Iowa to the Missouri river. In 1851 he captained a company of saints to Utah and settled at Kaysville, Davis, Utah.  He later joined family in Mt. Pleasant.

Note:  He was killed by his cousin, Thomas Ivie, who assailed him over a trivial matter and beat him with a burning stick from the camp fire May 11, 1859. He died the next day. The difficulty arose over some sheep which Isaac had in charge and which belonged to Thomas Ivie. His murderer was tried and condemned to death, but he managed to escape and went east. Brigham Young prophesied that Thomas Ivie would apostatize from the Church and that buzzards would pick his bones. This prediction was literally fulfilled, as the remains of Ivie were subsequently found in a cornfield nearly devoured by buzzards.

Life Sketch:
About 1830, the Taylors moved to Monroe County, Missouri. In 1834, Julia Ann and all of her family who were old enough, were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Julia Ann married Isaac Allred in Nashville, Tennessee.

Julia Ann and Isaac suffered many trials being driven from place to place. While in Nauvoo, she and her husband were sealed in the Nauvoo Temple, January 15, 1846. When they were ready to cross the Plains her husband was made captain of the fifty in the wagon train. They arrived in the Valley in the fall of 1851.

The family settled in Slaterville, Weber County, in 1855, and they lived there until 1858, when they were called to colonize Sanpete County. In May of 1859, a long-time friend quarreled with Isaac over some sheep. The man took a burning stick from the campfire and beat Isaac. He died the next day, leaving Julia Ann a widow with young children. With the help of the Lord and the older children, she was able to raise nine children into maturity. One child had died at age 6.

Julia Ann's last years were spent in Richmond, Cache County, Utah, with a daughter. She passed away May 16, 1898, at the age of eighty-sic years. She is buried in the Richmond Cemetery.

Alma Allred, an old settler died here Thursday, Jan. 25. Mr. Allred came to Utah in an early day. He came to Fairview with the first settlers. He has always been a well respected citizen. Mr. Allred had been visiting his son who was very ill. He started home along the railroad track a distance of about two miles and then slipped and fell into a cattle-guard  On reaching home he said he was not hurt, but on retiring, he began to cramp and later had paralysis  He died in four days. It was not until he was being laid out that it was discovered how badly he was hurt by the fall into the cattle-guard. It undoubtedly caused his death.

The Allred's were living in Nauvoo at the time of the prophet Joseph Smith’s death. John was 9 years old at the time. His father was often gone doing missionary work and other church assignments. When John was 11, his family left everything they had and headed west with the pioneers. They settled in Kaysville, Utah. Soon afterwards his father was called on a mission to England. At this time John was 17 years old and he and his older brother would be the main support for his mother and younger members of the family while his father was away. John’s family moved to Slaterville, Utah, where he met Mary Jane Knight. They were married in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City in 1861.

Mary Jane Knight

Mary Jane Knight was born in September 19, 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois, to John Knight Jr. and Mary Amelia Watson Knight. Her parents had joined the church in England and came to America to join the Saints. One the way over, their three-year old son, John, fell overboard but was rescued by some of the ship’s crew members. Her parents were well acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith, her father having worked for him on certain occasions, building fences and other farm work. She learned early in life how to cord, spin and weave, how to make soap, dry fruit, bake bread, and many other household chores. She was an excellent seamstress. John was a farmer. He became the first bishop of the Slaterville Ward, and served in that capacity for 21 years. John had a good sense of humor, loved to be with his family and do things with them, and was loved and respected by his family and ward members. Mary Jane held various church jobs. She was an excellent cook and was considered by many as an angel of mercy, helping the sick and often helping at the time of childbirth. Her granddaughter wrote of her: “My grandmother was faithful in her duties, courageous in gifts of charity, undaunted in her sacrifice and always prayerful in performing all her duties; carrying through life the high ideals of honesty and love for all who knew her.”

Life Sketch:
He was born 3 June 1851 in Pottawatomie Co., Iowa, at a place called “Pidgeon Hollow.” This was 15 miles south of Council Bluffs. His birth occurred while his parents were crossing the plains with the Saints, after they had left their homes at Nauvoo.  His father was a Captain of 50 wagons. They arrived in Salt Lake city in Aug. 1851 and later settled in Kaysville. In 1855 the family moved to Slaterville, Utah, where they lived until 1858, when they moved to Ephriam. In 1859, they moved to Mt. Pleasant and were among the earliest settlers there. 

The family was very poor and they were obliged to make sacrifices. Food, as well as everything else, was scarce. Many mornings Samuel left without breakfast to search for the days food from the earth.

Later the family moved to Spring City to live. The only school that Samuel ever attended was taught by his Mother. His first book was the old blue back speller: later he used the McDuffy reader. He was baptized and confirmed 3 June 1860, by Wiley Payne Allred. When he was 17 years old, he left home to earn his living. He first went to Nephi and from there to Chicken Creek, where he succeeded in getting a job with a Mr. Tidwell, a relative who had a ranch there. Here he labored for two years. With a pick and shovel and wheelbarrow, he succeeded in making the first Chicken Creek Dam.

Even at 15 years of age, he was dependable and trustworthy. He was put to running the Pony Express from different parts of the country. Often he ran into Indians and shots were exchanged. But he learned to circle their camping grounds, and going across country and through fields, he delivered the mail and express. He served in the Black Hawk War from 1866 to 1867, in the cavalry, and took part in pursuing the Indians when they raided Spring City 13 Aug. 1867. He received a pension from the US Government for these services. For three winters he helped haul rock and lumber to the Manti Temple from the canyons. He also made two trips to take men to work on the St. George’s Temple. He was blessed with natural ability in setting bones, assisting the sick, pulling teeth and even amputated diseased or mangled limbs, using the needle to sew the wounds up of his patients.

He served time in the penitentiary in the year 1888, for having two wives, but was released before his full time was served because of good behavior. At 18 years of age, he served as a ward teacher and continued in this capacity for 48 years. At 30, he was set .apart as a Counselor in Sanpete M.I.A. presidency and served for 20 years. He served as an alternate in the High Council for 2 years, then as High Councilman for 8 years. He was made Ward Bishop in 1913 by Apostle James E. Talmadge and he occupied this office until 9 Sept. 1928. As a member of the Old Folks Committee he served 34 years. Was a member of the Board of Health and Councilman for four years.

Emma's father died when she was about four years old and her mother married James Targett of Codford, Wiltshire, England, and to this union was born four children: Ann, Eliza, John and Mary. When Emma was just a young girl, she heard the gospel from a missionary by the name of Isaac Allred. She was converted to the truth of his words and braved condemnation and ridicule of family and friends to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was baptized 6 July 1852. Her mother and stepfather disowned her so she packed her few belongings in a trunk and left England, never to see her family again. She worked her way to America, land of Zion in 1852. On opening her trunk after her arrival, she found that someone had poured ink all over the few clothes and belongings she had brought with her.
  It was three years later when she left Mormon Grove, Kansas, 1 July 1855, with the Richard Ballantine Company to walk all the way to Utah. Somewhere during the crossing of the ocean or the first year in the United States, she met William and Ruth Hayward who were also converts. They arrived in Utah in 1853. Emma's company arrived in Salt Lake 25 September 1855. The Haywards and Emma Dewey became great friends and they settled in Ogden, Weber County, Utah.

Emma Dewey Allred was left a widow with two small children. During this period of bewilderment, William and Ruth Hayward came to her aid and befriended her.  Emma had known nothing but hardships and hard work from her early childhood, and being a widow with her small babies to provide for was just another chapter in her life to strengthen her character. William entered into polygamy and took Emma as his second wife on 6 June 1863. He made a home for her in Moroni, Utah.

  On 26 April 1864 a son, Thomas Henry, was born to them. Thus in the triangle of plural marriages Thomas had half brothers and sisters that had half brothers and sisters that were no relation to Thomas. Being a second wife obliged Emma to do what ever she could to earn a living for herself and three children. They went barefoot, poorly clothed and often hungry while their mother bent over the washboard or perspired over hot irons to earn a few cents from her neighbors. They grew up in the very poorest of surroundings. The children assisted their mother as they were able in the chores, and they indeed learned the value of money. William had been called to help settle the Sevier Valley (later called Richfield) about 1859. He later built a double house and moved Emma and her children to Richfield. They saw much poverty and because of Indian disturbances were forced to leave their home and move to Nephi. Here a daughter, Ruth, was born to Emma, but she died while still an infant of dysentery. William was called to help resettle Richfield in 1870; he took Ruth with him, but Emma remained in Nephi. Her daughter married Thomas West and moved to Chester in 1875; Emma followed her two boys. She was the first school teacher in Chester. Through all of Emma's hard work she always found time to give her time and talents to the church. The Chester Ward Records show that she was very active. She was a teacher in the first Sunday School and on 2 December 1883 was sustained as second assistant in the Sunday School. She held this position until 1892 when she was advanced to first assistant--a position few woman have ever held. She had been sustained as second Counselor in the Relief Society 13 January 1878 and when the Primary was organized on 22 June 1880 she was its first President. She was released from the Primary in 1893.

She followed the pattern of the Master Teacher of teaching by doing. She would take her primary children out into the wheat fields and follow along behind the thrasher gleaning the grain they left. Her hands were often raw and bleeding. When they had gleaned all they could, she would have it thrashed and give the wheat to the bishop, thus teaching the children both the value of work and the blessing of giving.

OBITUARY:  
Mrs. Emma Allred West, 76, one of the original group of pioneers who settled Mt. Pleasant, died at a late hour Tuesday night of heart failure following a long illness.

Mrs. West was born in Ogden, October 15, 1857, a daughter of Isaac and Emma Dewey Allred. Her parents were among the early settlers of Ephraim and then came to Mt. Peasant with the original group of settlers in the spring of 1859. They also lived in Moroni and Richfield and were establishing settlements in the Sevier valley when driven out by the Indians in 1866. She lived in Nephi until her marriage, March 11, 1875, to Thomas West of Mt. Pleasant. They lived at Chester until moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1895. Mr. West died in 1921.

Mrs. West was a charter member of the Mt. Pleasant Pioneer Historical association and had served as a director more than 20 years. She was first counselor in the Chester Relief Society during her residence there, and was treasurer in the Mt. Pleasant North ward Relief Society nine years.

Surviving are a daughter and two sons; Mrs. Burke, McArthur and Thomas Wilford West, Mt. Pleasant and Ray West, Payson; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and a brother, Thomas Hayward, Bountiful.

SALINA - William Adelbert Allred died of general debility at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bert Murphy, Tuesday afternoon. He was born Jan. 21, 1855 at Ephraim. The past three years he has lived in Salem and previously he made Chester his home for 59 years. 

Survivors are four children: Mrs. Bert Murphy and R. H. Allred of Salina; Leon and Ross Allred of Spring City. Funeral services were held Friday at Chester

Upon the celebration of her 80th birthday, she recalled Hole in the Rock and later pioneering experiences;   In 1850, the couple joined a wagon train of 99 families to move down to New Mexico. They were on the journey for two years, having to blaze their own trails most of the way. [Hole-in-the-rock was just the first leg of a long trip] The wagon train crossed the Colorado River on improvised rafts made of logs tied together. They had little trouble with Indians, for at that time most of the Indians whose territory they passed through were friendly. They would often go to the wagon camps to beg food and tease and annoy the women, knowing that the women were afraid of them, according to Mrs. Goddard. 

The wagon train went to Durango, Colo., where it stopped while the men of the families worked on the D. & R.G. Railroad, which was then under construction. After leaving Durango, they journeyed on to Gallup, N.M., which was nothing more than a blacksmith shop under a tree, she recalls. After going through Winslow, Ariz., the group went to Alma, N.M., arriving there the day after an Indian raid led by the famous chief Victorio. In the raid, the brother of Captain Cooney of the town's little garrison was killed, and Mrs. Goddard remembers that he was buried in a solid rock tomb, which is still a landmark there. From Alma, the wagon train journeyed on to Pleasanton, N.M., where the Goddards decided to make their home. They built a two-room home of solid concrete with small "portholes" for windows, the house being designed to withstand the many raids of Geronimo and his band of Apaches. The house was built in 1882, the year they arrived. Later, after the colony of Mormons there moved to Mexico, Mr. Goddard bought their land, and then bought the land where the soldiers were garrisoned, so that the Goddards acquired nearly all the property in the district, for ranching and farming.

In 1909, the family moved to Mesilla Park so that the seven younger children could attend college at New Mexico A. & M. Finally, in 1918, Mr. And Mrs. Goddard moved to El Paso and Mr. Goddard invested in real estate.
