William Hapworth 1788-1874 Azubah Grover 1780-1857

Story is that Thomas Hapworth, William's father, jumped ship, swam to the mainland, lived in the woods and married an American Indian. At that time, the United States was at war with the French so he may have claimed his wife was Native American when in reality, he may have married a French woman with the surname of Deshon. Nothing else is known about it, though some suspect he changed his surname.

With that in mind, I have found the name Mary Hapworth in America in the early 1700's. She married into the Woodman family. If Thomas really did change his surname to avoid the law, there is nothing to be done. If he kept the true name, Mary could fit into the family - she had her first child 50 years prior to William's birth and may have been Thomas's sister or other relative. The other fact is Edward Small married into the Woodman family in 1685 and the Hapworth's eventually married into the Smalls. If this triangle of families knew each other, and circumstances seem to indicate they did, introductions and resulting marriages could happen.
