John Knight and Sarah Elizabeth Taylor

John Knight
John Knight
Parents John Knight and Millie Watson
Born 17 Dec 1836 Gisbon, York, England
Military:  Lieutenant in Utah Militia
Pioneer:  Independent Company traveling in James' Snow's 50
Married Sarah Elizabeth Taylor 11 Dec 1859 Slaterville, Weber, Utah
Died 7 Dec 1904 Slaterville, Weber, Utah
COD:  Bronchitis
Buried Ogden City Cemetery, Ogden, Weber, Utah
Obituary:  John Knight, a respected resident of Slaterville, Weber County, Utah died December 7, 1904 at 1:25 a.m., age 67 years, 11 months and 20 days, after an illness of eight weeks from bronchitis.

Prior to his illness, he was enjoying his usual health, and being a very active and industrious man, his demise seems sudden.

Deceased was son of John and Millie (Watson) Knight; was born December 17, 1836, at Gisbon, Yorkshire, England.

The father joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints about 1837, and in 1840 made the trip across the ocean with his wife and two children, going to Nauvoo. He was baptized in June 1848. In 1852 he crossed the plains with his father in an independent company, owning their own wagon. The trip was made in James Snow's fifty. They reached Salt Lake City October 9, 1852. The family then came to Weber County.

He was married to Sarah E. Taylor, December 11, 1859.

Deceased was the father of twelve children, six sons and six daughters.

Three sons and five daughters survive him; also 60 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

At the time of Johnson's army trouble, he was a lieutenant in the Utah militia. He also saw service in Indian warfare and has experienced much of the hardships incident to settling the country. He has freely given his service in the upbuilding of Weber County.

For thirty years he held the office of school trustee. In 1855 he was ordained a member of the Fifty-third Quorum of the Seventies and made a high priest in 1879, at which he was set apart first counselor to bishop John A. Allred of the Slaterville ward remaining in the bishopric twenty-one years. He was at the time of his death a member of the High Priest Quorum, of the Weber Stake.

Funeral services were held December 11 at 11 a.m. at the Latter-Day Saints meeting house, presided over by Bishop James A. Slater.

Appropriate remarks were made by the speakers and beautiful were the floral offerings of relatives and friends. One wreath of natural flowers was sent from Oregon. The first three speakers were Brothers Cook, Morgan and Marsh, of Willard, Box Elder County, Utah, an old time friend of the deceased. They spoke in praise of his early life and had known him as an honest and unassuming young man, a devoted husband and father.

Patriarch P. G. Taylor of Harrisville paid a high tribute of respect to the character of Brother Knight. Brother John Manning and John Hudman followed with words of praise for the departed.

President C. F. Middleton of the Weber Stake of Zion was the next speaker. He spoke of the pleasure and glory that awaited those who labored for the church as Brother Knight had done, and exhorted the family to follow in the footsteps of their father.

Closing remarks were made by Bishop James A. Slater. The benediction was pronounced by Bishop Levi J. Taylor of Harrisville and the remains were followed by a large cortege of mourners and friends to the Ogden Cemetery, where was laid to rest the body of God's noble men.

May he rest in peace.

OBITUARY
Funeral of Prominent Young Lady of Slaterville Yesterday.

Yesterday, October 25, 1901, was laid to rest in the Ogden City Cemetery, the remains of Mary M. Knight Hutchins, a member of earliest settlers of Weber County.

She was born at Slaterville, Weber County, Utah, February 28th, 1862. Her parents are John Knight and Sarah Taylor Knight. She was extensively known and beloved by all who knew her. She was the mother of ten children, eight girls and two boys. Two girls and one boy having preceded her to the spirit world.

She died October 23, 1901, at her residence. The funeral services were held in the ward meeting house with James Slater presiding. The building was crowded to its utmost capacity, but not one-half the people who desired to attend could get admission to the services.

The ward choir furnished the music. Elder Joseph Hall, of Ogden, who had known deceased, from her early infancy, delivered a discourse, which embraced the life and character of Mrs. Hutchins.

He had known her and her family intimately for very many years, and bore testimony to the purity of her life, her integrity to the truth and to her duties as a daughter, wife and mother.

She was affectionate, kind and truthful in all stages of her life; it may be truthfully said from the cradle to the grave she was honored and loved by the community.

As she lived, so she died, and is glorious. She will sleep in peace until the morning of the first resurrection, when she will burst the barriers of the tomb and join her loved ones in an everlasting reunion.

The speaker said deceased had been one of his pupils in the district school in the early settlement of the place.

Appropriate remarks were also made by Elders John Hudman, C. A. Lindquist and the bishop.

The cortege which followed the remains to the grave, it is said, consisted of some sixty carriages.

On reaching the cemetery the invocation was given by Elder George Stranger. The grave was dedicated by Elder W. Manning and the benediction pronounced by Elder Allred.

Obituary:  Teancum Taylor died at Dragon last Sunday, November 17 after an illness which covered a period of nearly one year. Last March he was injured by a horse from which injuries he never fully recovered. The tragic death of his son Ruben Taylor last summer and worry over the reported disappearance of his son "Cap" Taylor from his home in Wyoming a few week ago, doubtless hastened the end.
The funeral was held in the Vernal ward house Wednesday afternoon, Bishop John N. Davis conducting the services. The burial was at the Vernal cemetery. Had he lived until December 21, Mr. Taylor would have been seventy-one years old , having been born in Missouri December 21, 1836. He has been in Utah for more than fifty years and was known all over the state. Deceased leaves a wife and eight children: James Taylor, Charles Taylor at Dragon; Jess and Lester Taylor, Mrs. Lavina Johnson and Mrs. Annie Searles at Deep Creek; Mrs. Lillie Ruple at Island Park and Teancum "Cap" Taylor at Shell, Wyoming. The latter was reported missing a few weeks ago but he had only gone to Montana on business.
During the Black Hawk war, Mr. Taylor did valiant service for his country and during the invasion of Johnston's army he was just as faithful to his church. He was one of the first settlers in Ashley valley and from Taylor mountain, which bears his name, he hauled timber for the building of cabins.

It refers to his father as "Cap" but I had never heard that he went by that nickname.
Teancum Junior did go by that as well as "Captain"
Note that it was alleged (meaning suspected that) he harbored and fed the mob
I don't know the full history so he is innocent until proven guilty.
Anyone know the truth?
