Joshua Pearson 1812 Sarah Ann Jeffcot 1814-1883

-M-
third great grandparents

Joshua Pearson (Sr)

Parents:  Unknown
Born Abt 1813 England
NOTE:  someone on Family Search has claimed (more than once)a Henry and Harriet are his parents.  When I looked at the record on Family Search, I found that Henry and Harriet Pearson were married six years AFTER Joshua was born, which made me doubt the validity of this claim. Also, there wasn't one official source (birth or christening or even a census) linking him to them beyond their surname.

IF Henry and Harriet were his parents, Joshua didn't name any of his children after them. I just can't feel right about claiming his parents are Henry and Harriet without more proof. I'm siimply trying to stop more misinformation.

I'll happily eat my words if someone finds out differently because I've been trying to find him. I want to find him. In spite of this, my feeling is, because he hated the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he stayed in England and remarried. I've yet to find one thing about Joshua Pearson after the divorce.

Occupation:  1833: Laborer 1841 Census (Excavator) 1857 Railwad Contractor
Note:  I think the 1857 occupation was supposed to be Railway Contractor.

Married 1) Sarah Jeffcott 3 Dec 1832 Old Swinford, Worcester, England

Marriage record

Note: Joshua was unable to accept Sarah's decision to become a member of the LDS church and they divorced.  There is no proof that I've ever seen that Joshua traveled to the United States.  He was a fairly young man, considering, so he likely remarried, though I have not found any proof - yet.  According to his granddaughter, Leoan: "None of the family corresponded with him after they came to the United States."

Another version (written by great-granddaughter Ellen Briggs Cook) "...Now when these three children were yet young, Joshua Pearson, Sen. went away and left his family supposedly with another woman and he has not been seen or heard of since. But several years later a lady came to their home and asked Great Grandmother if she was the wife of Joshua Pearson and if the three children were his and she told her they were and she said she just wanted to know for herself. So Great Grandmother told her not to worry about her for she would not have him back at any price. The lady left without giving her name or where she came from.
Note: while this reads like something in a novel, there is no proof (or disproof) this happened.  It does sound more like a family legend than reality, given that I heard the reason for the divorce was because he hated the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Also, in that same 'telling' about the 'other woman' it claims Sarah Ann Jeffcot married George Jones after they arrived in Utah and there is physcial proof they were married in England and traveled together to Utah.

Note about Polygamy: Sarah told Richard to take a second wife as she was unable to give him children. Thus it was that Richard became a polygamist.  With that said, she didn't want to see him with another woman, so he lived separately from her. The children he had with Elizabeth Vesey Baker called Sarah their "Hot Springs Mama"
