Life Sketch from Book, Conquerors of the West:
Henry's mother died when he was six years old and, shortly after that, he became a chimney sweep to help support the family. When he was 12, he had two years of education. When he was 16, he was baptized into the Church, and at the age of 18, he was sent on a mission to North-Western England. In February 1848, Henry, his father, and stepmother sailed to America. After arriving in St. Louis, they spent the next four years working and preparing to cross the plains. During this time his stepmother left the family. Henry married and they left with his father to go west. Their first child, a son, was born shortly after their arrival in the Valley. They lived in Salt Lake for the rest of their lives. Henry remained a faithful member of the church. He served in the Nauvoo Legion during the Johnston's Army era...then it lists family members, marriages of children

Married Mary C (Katie) Putman 7 Jun 1885 Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Note: Mary evidently went by different names. She is Mrs. Mary C Putnam on the marriage certificate, she's listed as Catherine in the 1870 Census for Illinois
while living in the Timothy Stubbs household with her mother and possibly an aunt. In 1880 Census page 189A, she is Katie Putnam and lists her occupation as an actress and is living with her mother. In 1910 she's going by Katie P Emery. Not sure if her parents ever married since her mother is Mary Mc Williams in 1870 and Mary Putnam in 1880. I did find one bit of evidence Katie was involved with theater - a copyrighted play she wrote called "The Jokers".

(not Samuel Porter) and she was buried in Oak Woods Cemetery in Illinois, not Michigan. If you read the comment at the bottom of the blog, someone has filled in a few blanks.
More about Henry: He received his early education at the private schools in Salt Lake City, finishing with one term at the Deseret University. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 18 November 1860 at the age of eight.
He entered the theatrical field in 1874 as a member of the old Salt Lake City Theater Stock Company. He played many seasons in places like Denver, Colorado, Helena, Montana, and San Francisco, California. He served a mission to Europe in 1877 at the age of 25.
He joined the Katie Putnam company in the season of 1883-1884 and became her manager in 1886.
They even made a trip to Australia to do theater. He joined with a man by the name of D. L. Martin and they formed the Martin & Emery Company.
Theater consumed the two and they never had any children. By 1910 they were living in Benton Harbor, Berrien, Michigan.
He last visited Salt Lake City the year before his death as an advance manager for an opera company.
Notes from Family Search Memories section: "Harry Emery was an actor. His wife was Katie. He lived in the East. He would give tickets [to his nieces/nephews) to a show. He acted in SL theaters and lived in the East"

For the 1920 and 1930 Census, Sarah Timpson is living a double life. She was the second wife of John, but polygamy was outlawed in 1890 and they were only married a few years before it became illegal. All of their children were born after the manifesto the LDS church released making polygamy a thing of the past. The two censuses, therefore, claim she is married to "George". In the censuses, John is with his first wife, Jenette. It was obvious that despite the manifesto, John and Sarah had six children and he maintained her household and their children.

William Lorenzo Emery |
Born 2 Jan 1869 Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah
Occupation: (1900) Railroad timekeeper
Note: it sounds like he was in charge of recording time for his fellow employees, not timing for trains
(1940) Meter Reader for Utah Power & Light
Married Sarah Lurena Nebeker 2 Jun 1901 Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah
William and Sarah's marriage license His brother, Frank, may have been the Deputy Clerk at the time His father married them - he was a Bishop |
A Bit About William: (my notes/corrections/observations will be in blue)
According to the account written by Richard Emery, son of George and his second wife, Mary Pierpoint:
"William Emery...resided for his entire lifetime in the home where he was born (1481 Stratford Avenue is the address on his death certificate and looks nothing like the family home - which was located at 43 N 7W according to the picture of the family house above and is located next to a current overpass). Since this was his last address, perhaps he was living with a child at the time of his death?
1481 Stratford Avenue as it is today - the old house must have been torn down. Note the house number on the front of the porch. |
and was employed by the Utah Power and Light Company. He was a fine man having fulfilled a mission for the Latter-Day Church I can find no information about when or where he served an LDS Mission
. ... however, he, after gaining a college education, left the church in favor of atheism. Up to practically the time of his death, he believed there was no God. He was fanatical to a degree in his beliefs and attempted at times to induce other family members to join him in his belief. [Perhaps the last word should read disbelief]. ADDITIONAL NOTE FROM FAMILY SEARCH: "Well educated, he said, "Everyone should have a talent." He was an accomplished musician - piano player. He told the children that if they didn't develop a talent, they would, in the next life, be a donkey or animal. The more talented, you would be a bird.
He was said to have stated that no force could raise him from the grave once he was buried; and it is interesting to note that at one time, during heavy rain and flooding in SLC, some of the SL City cemetery was flooded [ when I researched about the flooding, I found the following site: https://geology.utah.gov/map-pub/survey-notes/geosights/geosights-salt-lake-city-cemetery-salt-lake-county/]and graves were washed out, one of these being his grave and his casket was washed down into the streets of SLC. [Nothing was mentioned in the article about the graves being washed out into the streets, but there was a picture of the place where the flood did go through. Headstones looked buckled and the ground was in upheaval.] Apparently, through the will of God, about a year before the time of his death, he must have received a revelation because he resumed his belief in God and Jesus Christ and the Latter-Day Saint religion."

Wilford's death certificate |
Samuel porter Putnam is her father although the death certificate does say harry the same name as her husband. Samuel porter Putnam wasn't much of a father to her. The informant on the death certificate is who you should look at. My great grandmother said her mother's father was john fisher...it through us off for thirty years. His name was Samuel fisher, and he died when his daughter was about two. Like I said Katie's father wasn't around...Katie was a member of the daughters of American revolution, and put Samuel porter Putnam as her father.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the insight into Katie. I was happy just to find the little I did about her. I would love to know more, if you feel like sharing. My email is michelleterickson@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMR. (SAMUEL PORTER) PUTNAM West Chicago, Cook County
ReplyDeleteHe is listed as Mr. 35 US (should be 28 or 29 NY) and a musician, his wife listed as Mrs. is Mary McWilliams 20 ENG. What appears to be her mother, Mrs. McWilliams 48 ENG and J. Jefferson 20 ENG are with them. These listings of “Mr.” and ‘Mrs.’ are really of little help. But Rand Putnam dug up a marriage record that he married Mary McWilliams on August 1, 1849 here in Cook County. He was first married to Sarah Cowdin on November 10, 1842 back in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He and another wife Minerva Brock who he will marry November 3, 1855 in Tazewell County, and they will be in Mason County in 1870. This, the other one in Chicago, Samuel Porter is a son of Samuel Putnam (1752) and Hannah Kimball from Worcester County Massachusetts and then out to Chautauqua County New York where this Sam was born November 9, 1821. The family then moved back to Massachusetts.
She was cremated and buried in Benton Harbor...Morton Hill Cemetery!
ReplyDeleteShe died in the Knights Flanders Home in Chicago.
Oh...you are welcome! According to the death certificate she was buried in the cemetery above, but according to the several obituaries...Including local to Benton Harbor she was buried there. You have to remember she was cremated most likely half the ashes were in Chicago, and the other half in Benton Harbor.
ReplyDeleteKatie was my second cousin 3 x removed, I just discovered.
ReplyDeleteShe owned a beautiful old home in Benton Harbor. Do you know if she and her husband built it and what brought her here to live?Any information is appreciated. The address is 1297 Colfax Ave. St. Benton Harbor, MI.
ReplyDeleteHi Daisy, I'm assuming you are talking about Katie. It sounds like you know more than I do about Katie. All I have is what is listed. I will look at the address though and possibly post a picture of it.
DeleteHow long were Katie and her husband married? She owned a beautiful old home in Benton Harbor which still stands. Did she build it? I would love to learn more about her life and home here. Would be able to direct me?
