Note: I have seen three marriages for him - Elizabeth Schwank/Schwenk, Catherine Elizabeth Cliver, Catherine Oliver. I have never heard of/seen Catherine Oliver's name before. Not sure where the info came from on Family Search, but there are no sources given, so I am discarding the idea he had a second marriage. Another 'proof' of only one marriage is the fact his wife ELIZABETH was mentioned in his will.
Notes: He emigrated 2 Sep 1749. Point of origin was Erbach, Germany. He arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship "Albany" with Hans Georg Edelman, Hans Peter Edelman (Peter Edelman, sick). Ship Master was Robert Brown, from Rotterdam, last from Cowes.
Valentine was a Mennonite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mennonite) registered to pay taxes in Bedford County, PA 1800. Dublin and Ayr Townships, Bedford County, 2 white males over 25, 1 white female over 25
There is a will for "Vollontine Edelman of Air Township Bedford County and State of Pennsylvania" for September 29, 1817. Executors of the will were wife Elisabeth and son Vollontine Edelman. Children are identified as Jacob Edelman, Mary Lovecob, Caty Swank, Elisabeth Dishon, and Vollontine Edelman.
Note: Online Genforum, the year of the will was originally given as 1871, but that couldn't be right because his children are dead by then and that can't be right because they are mentioned in the will. I figured the two last figures got transposed. If they were correct, then this will belonged to his youngest son and it would change everything.

Note: many people have shared what was contained in the book, The Forney Five Family Records which was written by Charles Forney, published 1937. However, one thing I keep in mind is that people are human and make mistakes. The book claims James Houston (husband of Mary Magdalena Ettleman) was born in Ireland (he wasn't).

Life Sketch
This is how the story goes as shared on Family Search:
James and Mary Magdalena Ettleman Houston were well to do farmers. They joined the Mormon Church and the subsequent persecutions, lost their farm and home. Later, they joined the Saints at Nauvoo. Sometime in late 1841, while working on the Nauvoo Temple, Grandfather died of exposure. Later Grandmother went to live with a dear friend; Mrs. Alleman (may be Allman). Just why Grandmother did not go to live with one of her children is not known. Her daughters had nearly all married men prominent in the church. Mary was the wife of Joseph Smith and later of Heber C. Kimball; Sarah was Mrs. Parley P. Pratt; Ann was Mrs. Mrs. Newell Whitney; Susan was Mrs. Benjamin Mitchell. She also had a son, Jon. Her oldest daughter, Elizabeth never joined the Church. It was probably that the poor little mother, whose health was impaired by the bitter experiences she had undergone, felt unequal to further persecutions and journeys in search of a home. At any rate, she died in 1846 at the home of her friend in Nauvoo.
Now, to address the speculation at the end of this sketch:
I believe the reason Mary Ettleman didn't go to live with her children is a matter of logistics. Her only son was dead as of 1852, and her girls (except Elizabeth) were living over a thousand miles away in Utah. Elizabeth never joined the church and married James McBee, another non-member. If Elizabeth happened to be bitter against the church, there may have been friction.

The motion of the wagon caused the pole to fly forward and hit the team on the back, at the same time pinning him in such a way that he was dragged to death by the runaway team.

I send you a very brief sketch of the life of Sister Sarah Houston Pratt, who died at Coyote Creek, Grass Valley, Garfield County, May 26th 1886, which you will confer a favor by publishing.
She was the daughter of James and Mary Houston, born in Stark County, Ohio, August 3rd, 1823. When 9 years of age she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and, with her parents, gathered with the Church and suffered in all the persecutions of that time.
In 1848 she was married to Apostle Parley P. Pratt, and in 1847, in company with her husband and the first company of Saints, started across the plains, traveling on foot, with her infant in her arms, most of the way. From that time until her demise she suffered many severe hardships; but in the hardest trials she trusted in the will of God. It may truly be said of her, “Thou hast come out of much tribulation.” Of late she has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Sarah E. King, at Grass Valley. She leaves 6 children and 30 grandchildren to mourn her departure.

Note: While the history from Lucille is fun to read, there are a few points I feel are important enough to bring up for they change relationships and timing.
1) Catherine became an orphan on 21 Mar 1847 when her mother died in Winter Quarters (see Winter Quarters Project website) so she was not an orphan when she first arrived there and likely traveled to Winter Quarters with her mother and maybe a married sister or two.
2) In the story, Catherine's sisters were listed as Mrs. Heber C. Kimball and Mrs. Henry Rollins. Anne, her sister, did marry Heber, but I the way I understood it, Mrs. Rollins was actually the sister of
Horace's first wife, Nancy Walker - see below.

After the children went to live with Nancy's sister, Mrs. Henry Rollins. Catherine was taken along too, to take care of the children who loved her. Together they crossed the plains.
Grandfather received word that his children, with one of the Parley Pratt Companies was well on its way to the Valley. (NOTE: Catherine traveled at the age of 16 with the Willard Richards company which left 3 Jul 1848 and arrived in Salt Lake in mid October 1848) So with a few other brothers he hurried forth again on horseback to meet them. It is thought that he sighted the emigrant train somewhere in Wyoming. Grandmother still continued to live with the Henry Rollins family and to take care of the little Alexanders until her marriage to Horace.
