This is a Family History blog. Lately, it was unblocked by Bitdefender which thought it was a 'dangerous site.' I requested and received a review and they deemed this blog as NOT dangerous. I invest a lot of time in gathering this information. Please give credit and list this blog as a source. Note that there are links that are no longer viable but I did use them as sources, so they are left in place, hopefully with a note letting you know that they are no longer working.

Robert Flint abt 1705 Susanna Bauman 1709
Whenever possible, I like to include links from experts on family lines and this site belongs to David Burton Flint, author of several books, including the historical fiction concerning this family called, "The Life and Times of Robert Flint the Pioneer" His website gave this family character, flavor, and life. Even better, he has a personal investment in getting this information out. He is one of the descendants of Alexander, Robert's 2nd son. David was kind enough to allow me to put his link here:
http://www.dbflint-colonial-wars.com/ancientflintburial.html
Note: DEAD LINK(S)
I was just warned by Ken (see comments below) that there are dead links on this page. I have not done research on this line since 2010. I will do my best to fix them as I go through and replace what Google ruined when they removed all the pictures. I am currently writing/researching another novel and working on my own family history line (this is my husband's line).
Here is a working link (as of 2017) about David, complete with picture and some personal history: http://www.authorsden.com/davidburtonflint
Do yourselves a favor and take a gander at what it provides. You'll enjoy reading about David's journey and ultimate find - the family graveyard. Thank you, David.
Note: If you are traveling in New York, the Cherry Valley Museum has some items that belonged to Robert Flint.

Note: Bowman’s creek was also known as Sprout Brook then Canajoharie Creek in the town of Canajoharie, New York.
Robert Flint
Born Abt 1705 New York
Parents: John Ephraim Flint (unknown mother)
Married 1) Susanna Bauman 1 Jan 1732 Reformed Church, Schoharie, Schoharie, New York
2) Joanna Hand (lots of possible dates for marriage, the funniest one is 1832 - which is 33 years after Robert died)
Military: French and Indian War
1790 Census states Flint, Robert had the following number of people in his household:1 -Free white males over 16 years
4 -Free white males under 16 years
2-Free white females
0 -All other free persons
1-Slaves
Died 1799 Sprout Brook, Montgomery, New York

Susanna Bauman
Born 27 Mar 1709 Sprout Brook, Montgomery, New York
Parents: John Adam Bauman and Susanna Catherina Dresch
Died 1792 (this has to be wrong since we know Robert's second wife, Joanna, died that same year and Robert wasn't a polygamist) Susanna's death had to be after 1742, the year Robert, their youngest son, was born. The other option is that they are the same woman - however, in light of the birth of the last son (Isaac) taking place in 1768, when Susanna would be 59 years old, I rather doubt it.

2nd Wife: Joanna Hand
Note: I included her here because her stone was so cool - the fact they used regular stones to mark the graves is both educational and a sign that someone cared enough to do it.
Born abt 1725 or later
Parents: Josiah Hand and Mary Halsey
Died 1792 Canajoharie, New York
Buried: Family Burial Ground, Sprout Brook, Montgomery, New York Note: you can barely see it, but the date is in the upper left hand corner of the rock and her initials are on its face (J.F.)

Note: there is an annoying variety of dates for the marriage to Deborah - everything from 1748 (he'd be six years old) to 1774. If we go by his birthdate and figure he married at 16, he'd be married somewhere around 1758 at the earliest

The information about Robert Flint and his family presented here is highly confusing. According to the historical fiction by David Flint, Robert Flint immigrated to America from Flintshire, Wales, met and married Joanna Bauman in 1730 and had four sons viz: Adam (1731), Alexander and Cornelius (1732-1734) and Robert (1735). There was no son John or daughter Elizabeth mentioned. All of this information is counterdicted in several other sources so it is very difficult to verify the truth.
ReplyDeleteHello, "ew"
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if the information presented is confusing. I do my best (as a human) to present the information I find and I list their sources. Family History can be very confusing and contradicting, often taking years to untangle. Note that the information about Elizabeth came from Ancestral File (which is now Family Search). That is a free genealogy site and the information comes from many people, who are also human and it has no other sources. Did she exist? Good question. Where did their information come from? Likely a Family Group Sheet, but it was not listed. There is, however, an unusually large gap between Adam and Alexander. As far as John goes, I have not worked on this line since 2010 and do not recall the particulars. My suggestion, at this point, is to contact David through his website. He was very helpful and eager to tell this family's story. I'm sorry I could not have been more help.
Do any of the listed links work? What is "David Flint's" URL? Where does David Flint document his sources? The list goes on and on and on and on and on and on!
ReplyDeleteKen,
DeleteSorry if you are having trouble with the links. Here is one that you could use (I checked it) http://www.authorsden.com/visit/author.asp?AuthorID=12980
I will make a note at the top of the page letting others know there are dead links. Thanks, Michelle
Information about Johanna Hand Josiah Hand and Mary Halsey. Johanna is listed as marrying unknown Flint. Just discovered this link so I don't know how accurate it is. Johanna's father died in 1739 and left a will that mentioned his daughter johanna flint. If this is right, Johannaa married Robert before 1739. But susanna was still alive in 1742. http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/i/l/Shirley-E-Milewski/GENE1-0009.html
ReplyDeleteHere is another link with more information about the hand family. This one lists robert as her husband.

ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to have any/all sourced updates. Thanks for commenting. I look forward to hearing from you. This branch of my husband's family tree can use all the help it can get.
