Thomas Turney ("the Turncoat")
Parents: Thomas Turney and Martha Lyon
Born 2 Mar 1754 Fairfield Township, Fairfield, Connecticut
Thomas was referred to as a "Turncoat" because he fled to Long Island, New York to join the Loyalists (those loyal to the English crown) in 1776. He was said to have 'joined the enemy' (18 May 1781 Fairfield Town Records) and the fact he was not mentioned in his father's will means he was in disfavor. He moved to New Brunswick, Canada in 1783 as a loyalist. He first settled on the Kennebecasis River in Kings County, then in 1787 received a land grant at Keswick, Douglas Parish, York County. In 1797 he purchased land at Swan Creek, Burton Parish, Sunbury County.
Married Amy Coy 15 Nov 1792 Gagetown, Queens, New Brunswick, Canada
Died 23 Mar 1840 Sunbury, New Brunswick, Canada

I don't think Amy Coy is the mother of Martha Turney. The ages just don't match. Since Thomas was a lot older than Amy, I think Amy was his second wife. At least Martha, born about 1786 and Emeline, born about 1788, would be the first wife's daughters. Emeline, first wife of Hezekiah Estabrooks, gave birth to three children before she died in 1810, so she had to have been born before 1793. Hezekiah married 2nd. Sarah Turney in 1811 and had many more children with her. Some have her born before Martha, but I think that is probably in error and that she may have been the daughter of Amy Coy. Lentze
ReplyDeleteMy information came from Ancestral File. I haven't done any of my own poking around - I don't even have an Emeline listed. When I have time, I will poke around for original sources for this information.
