From Family Search:  Bennett Clark wrote the following (anything in red is what I added for clarification):
I was a Missionary in New Zealand. My wife and I had 13 children.

When we came to America our son Charles stayed in New Zealand rather than going to America because he was recently married.
Kauri Tree

I sent my daughter (Elizabeth Mary Clark, called 'Lizzy') at the age of 12 years old with 2 Missionaries to America.  It took her 3 weeks to cross the water. She lived with an L.D.S family as a servant for 2 years before we arrived in America. We lived in West Warren. I had a cane I brought over from New Zealand. I needed the cane because of my bad legs. My cane is quite unique. I had made it from a willow of the Kowry (Kauri) Tree. The handle is curved and I carved and tapered it to the bottom. It is lightweight and looks well used.

I lived in Blossom across the street from the Church. I became confined to a rocking chair and never was able to use my cane again. The Elders of the Church would carry me and my rocking chair over to the church so I could teach my Sunday School class.
Note:  there is a picture of the actual cane on Family Search. I was denied permission to put it on my blog. Here is the link: https://www.familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/89375280?p=420102&returnLabel=Bennett%20Clark%20(KWNL-8G8)&returnUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.familysearch.org%2Ftree%2Fperson%2Fmemories%2FKWNL-8G8

Married: Martha Matilda Morris 11 Nov 1889 Masterton, Wairarapa, New Zealand
Children:  Rupert, Walter, Eileen, Roy
Died 16 Dec 1935 Fire Station, Masterton, New Zealand
OBITUARY:
The many friends of Mr. Charles Clark will regret to learn of his death which occurred at an early hour this morning at his residence, the Masterton Fire Station. The late Mr. Clark who was 68 years of age, was very well known in Masterton and district and the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the family in their sad bereavement. The late Mr. Clark, who had only been ill for a short time, had been motorman and caretaker at the Masterton Fire Station for the past 17 years. Prior to joining the staff of the Brigade he had been engaged in the sawmilling industry in the Taueru District and had resided in and around Masterton for nearly 50 years. He was a member of the Masterton Savage Club and though of a quiet, retiring nature was very popular with his fellow members. The late Mr. Clark is survived by a widow and three sons, Messrs. Walter, Roy (Jack) Masterton, and Rupert, Featherston, and one daughter, Mrs. Yates, Martinburough. The funeral will leave the Fire Brigade Station at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. 2. That was important to understand, thank you for clarification.

Will was only married to Polly for a month before he married Emma - do you know what happened?

    Are Polly and Derlin related?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Polly and Derlin (Actually Levi Derlin) were siblings. Polly died shortly after Will and my grandmother married. While Emma helped raise Raymond, he was not her son, she was already 46 years old when her and Will married.

    1. Thank you for more clarification - I gather that Raymond was with the first wife, Anna. I have a Raymond listed there (I had wondered why they would have two Raymonds). I appreciate your comments.

  4. This was so wonderful to find. My great-grandfather was Walter and I have worked on his genealogy off and on for a few years. This website provides so many interesting details that I didn't know. If there is any information I can provide, please let me know.

  5. Susan, thank you for your kind words. Please share anything about Walter you think would be appropriate. The only information I can think of right now is a younger picture of Walter if you have it, along with a wedding photo if you can scrounge one up. Those are always nice. Also, if there is an unusual/funny story that would make people remember him.
