Eli Munn 1812-1883 Sarah Weston abt 1817

Eli Munn
Born 19 Apr 1812 Worcester, Worcester, England
Christened 21 Apr 1812 St Clement, Worcester, Worcester, England
Note:  There is an Eli Munn listed in the English criminal Register in 1862 in Worcester.  I'm not sure if it is this Eli.  Regardless, the Eli in the register was sentenced to five years for burglary.  This Eli's youngest son (James Henry) was convicted of larceny and sentenced to prison.
Occupation:  Baker (1841-1871)
Eli and some of his sons were Bakers
The family had financial troubles.  Eli was summoned to bankruptcy court 2 July 1853 - summoned from Coventry Gaol (jail)

CHILDREN
There are a few issues: It was not uncommon to name two children the same if the first one died; it was even less common to name an 'heir and a spare' by the same name, however, it was done. In this family's case, the first Eli reached an age to get married so I can't understand why they would use Eli for a second time.  Maybe the second Eli died at birth (common in twins) and they couldn't think of another name?  They were very fond of the name Henry - using it in three of the children's names.

Charles' death and probate information

Obituary from a local paper:
With painful suddenness, the death occurred during the early hours of Tuesday morning of Mr. Charles Couse, baker and confectioner, of 225 High Street, West Bromich. Mr. Couse who was 67 years of age and was well known and deeply respected in the town had been spending the evening with some friends, returning home at 10:30 p.m. About two a.m. he had a seizure and although medical assistance was quickly summoned, he never rallied and passed away a few hours later.
Charles Couse

Succeeding to an old established business, Mr. Couse rose to a position of eminence in his trade...For five years he was a Director of West Albion Bromich Football Club and for three years, he served as a representative of Sandwell Ward on the Town Council. He was also President of the West Bromich Master Bakers Association, on the executive committee of the Birmingham and District Master Bakers Association, Treasurer of the New Y.M.C.A. and Superintendent of the Wesley Sunday School.

Note:  He doesn't show in any other census as Munn, but was adopted at age 6 by James Couse - no reason given. Considering the criminality of some of his family members, perhaps his folks felt it better for Charles to have a new start elsewhere. He shows as Charles Couse in all the rest of the censuses.

  1. Hi there, i was very excited to locate your information on the Munn family. I believe that Angelina Munn & Robert Williams are my great, great, grandparents and i'm very keen to find any further information on them, especially Robert. I noticed you received info on Angelina from her great granddaughter, "J Tullock". Is there any way i can be put in touch with him/her to follow up. I live in South Australia and my Mum and I are trying to trace our family history. Thanks, Gaynor
